Retirement for stay-at-home parents

Though I never spent much time watching Leave It to Beaver as a child, I have often wondered if June Cleaver ever considered the state of her financial future. A stay at home mom, tasked with the unbelievable job of doing virtually everything in the Cleaver home, did June Cleaver consider her retirement? Did she keep a savings account apart from Ward’s? Would she now? Were her retirement hopes and dreams pinned entirely on her husband’s 401(k)? Joe Mont of TheStreet, in a recent article, suggests the need for stay-at-home moms and dads—whose job bring them to work the same unreal schedule as, for example, a medical student in his or her residency—to have a well thought out retirement plan. Even as pension funds continue to recoup losses and, in some cases, slowly crawl into positive territory, aspiring retirees everywhere are still feeling some ambivalence about the plausibility of the prospect of retirement. In fact, some pension funds, looking to reclaim their losses as well as a sense of security, filed suit against those who peddled mortgage-backed securities (which have earned the appropriate moniker “toxic assets”) about which there has been so much recent discussion. In light of this pervasive uncertainty regarding retirement, the question of, “Which jobs come with the best retirement benefits,” has become extremely relevant. Read more
