Although there are exceptions (I could certainly name a few), most job seekers and employees seek positions with promotion potential. That is, they look for or transition into positions, which might serve as a platform from which they can climb the corporate ladder. Yet, as one commentator put it, “landing your boss’ job,” takes more than vision or finding a position with promotion potential. With the Internet, we face an ever-expanding spectrum of choices. While the Internet has certainly served as an agent for globalization, even more fundamentally, the Internet is about facilitating choice. It is a choice engine. A seemingly infinite landscape upon which anyone can build virtually anything, the Internet is an open platform, which spurs competition and innovation. With regard to searching for a job, the Internet has spurred the invention of innumerable new and technologically savvy job search sites, each offering something different and unique to job seekers. With so many choices available, however, how is one to choose? Although the age of CareerBuilder and Monster are far from gone (each has something great to offer job seekers), other sites, such as the jobs aggregator Indeed.com, which trolls online job boards for information, have become a staple of the job seeker’s toolbox. Looking back to when I was relentlessly searching for work after graduation, I’m not surprised recruiters weren’t interested in my resume—a poorly formed, executed, and thoroughly generic document which contained virtually no information about my relevant skills, or how I might be a “perfect fit” for a given position. My rationale? I thought my resume spoke for itself. The truth is, resumes not only need to demonstrate how you are perfectly equipped to perform the duties outlined by a job announcement, but must contain certain words and forms of speech, while excluding others. John Denver once sang, “Love is everywhere.” Although the office is a professional workspace it is not immune to the effects of love. While cupid’s arrow can strike at any time and within any context, and its side effects felt by any and everyone equipped with the bio-chemical hardwiring necessary to experience feelings of love, office place romances should take place outside of the office.
